Like Leonardo da Vinci said, “Water is the driving force of all
living beings.” Without water, there is no life. And, in the past few years,
the importance of having safe water has been highlighted. Factors such as
industrialization, over use of pesticides and damages caused through various
climatic changes giving rise to impurities, have made the purification of water
essential.
There are different water purifying styles and methods used.
1. Boiling Water
In both urban and rural areas, boiling the water is still
practiced. It is an ancient process of
eradicating the germs in the water. And another added advantage is that it is
cost efficient. Although it kills most of the microorganisms, impurities like
sand, dust, etc. are not removed, as they don’t dissolve in the water.
2. Bio-sand filter
Bio-sand filter is a unique water purifying style, which is used in
villages and rural areas. It is also used locally as it is easy to maintain and
has no on-going costs. Water from springs, wells, lakes, etc. is used. The
water is poured on top of the water whenever needed. The raw water passes
through biological layers of sand. The water, after travelling through the
gravel, comes out of the spout.
3. Candle Water Purifiers
These kinds of purifiers are used in kitchens and have a simple
operating mechanism. The candle has minute pores and any particle with the size
larger than the pores gets blacked out and cannot pass. Its advantage is that
it requires no electricity but it still fails to purify the water thoroughly
and water still needs to be boiled before consumption.
4. RO purification

Reverse osmosis is the most commonly used water purification method today.
RO uses membrane technology to eradicate the dissolved impurities and germs
from water. The downside is that it alters the taste of water and might remove
the essential mineral nutrients from the water. Most of the water purifying
companies, which provide the products for home and office use, have RO
purification technology. However, the drinking water standards
of consumers have increased. Therefore,
the water purifying company Kent has produced a mineral RO technology that has
an advanced technology that retains the taste of the water and mineral content
of water.
Water is purified in more than these 4 types mentioned. However,
these types are most commonly used for regular drinking and home use.
