Evaluating Home Air Purifiers

Air purification is suggested to patients with allergic and respiratory disease. Air purifiers have a cleansing effect on the environment. Air purification for a whole residence is possible thanks to home air purifiers.

According to estimates, people spend close to ninety percent of their time indoors in today’s world. To stay comfortable, more and more people have started using air-conditioners and room heaters.

To use a majority of these devices, one has to seal all doors and windows. Rooms are also sealed so that pollutants from outdoors do not enter. However, numerous pollutants like smoke, dust, pollen and animal dander are found indoors and overlooked often.

Studies suggest that, these pollutants cause multiple diseases and trigger allergies. Using a home air purifier ensures that the contaminants are neutralized. They eliminate viruses and bacteria inhibiting their growth. They also oxidize and neutralize chemicals, gases and cigarette fumes from the air.

The efficiency of air purifiers is based on one critical factor - The correlation between the concentration of particles in the air entering the device and the concentration of particles in the air leaving the device.

There are various technologies used in air purifiers such as electrostatic precipitation, mechanical filtration, etc., but the most efficient technology available, is the ozone generation method. This technology produces ozone gas, a highly reactive oxidant with the exceptional power to eliminate bacteria, viruses & harmful germs present in the air.

There are two types of air purifiers based on the type of installation.

1) Wall mountable air purifiers: As the name suggests, these air purifiers can be installed on the wall of your desired location. These devices are capable of purifying offices, conference rooms, restaurants and other large areas. They are ideal for rooms of upto 400 sq ft. Applications include neutralizing stale and foul odor and purifying the air; oxidizing and disinfecting chemicals, gases and cigarette fumes from the air; removing foul odors emanating from restrooms and bathrooms.

2) Portable air purifiers: These are devices with a compact and portable design. They are suitable for installation in homes, offices, living rooms, bathrooms or kitchens and ideal for rooms of upto 150 sq ft. They are also called table top air purifiers. They are designed to be used in single rooms or specific areas within the home. These systems are an option when a heating system is not conducive to a whole house cleaner, such as the case with a wood burning stove or fireplace.

While purchasing an air purifier, ensure that the brand you have chosen is approved and certified by a recognized and appreciated institute. Kent for example, has been certified by CE, a world renowned institution.
